Bab El Khadhra (Gate of greenery)

This gate was so called because it opened on green fields where one made market gardening and shrubbery. Defended by a bastion, the gate commanded the roads to Carthage and Ariana. Its economic and strategic role led to the disappearance of Bab Carthagena. However, as it only had a very narrow bay, quite insufficient to meet the needs of traffic, after 1881, it was replaced by the current monumental complex which gives a picturesque character to this district which was long deprived.
