Sidi Mehrez Mosque

Sidi Mehrez Mosque

Also called M’Hamed Bey Mosque, it is considered the most beautiful of Tunis. It should be noted that its usual name, Sidi Mehrez Mosque comes from the fact that it is located in front of the zaouïa of Sidi Mehrez, patron saint of the medina of Tunis.

It was built at the end of the seventeenth century but the work could not be completed because of the troubles that Tunis knew at that time. It follows in its architecture the great Ottoman mosques, clearly breaking with local architectural traditions. It remains to this day, the only Tunisian mosque whose plan is copied from Turkish models.
