Bab Sâadoun

Bab Sâadoun

Bab Saadoun (Saadoun Gate)

The gate takes its name from a pious man named Sidi Bou Sâadoun, who lived in the vicinity of this gate, in the 8th century of the hegira (15th century AD). It gave access to the Bardo road, where the roads of Bizerte, Beja and Kef were branching off, hence its functional importance. However, it had only one bay, that is why after 1881, not answering any more the need of the road traffic, it was demolished and replaced by the magnificent door with three bays which still exists today.
